Friday, February 15, 2013 Closed-End Funds Are Beating Everyone Though open mutual funds and ETFs are doing well, closed-end funds seem to be doing even better, according to a report from The Street. Reporter Stan Luxenberg cites a Morningstar study showing that intermediate-term bond open mutual funds had an average return of 7 percent, while equivalent closed-end funds averaged 11 percent. Similarly, open-ended emerging markets funds averaged 4.3 percent, closed-end 6.7 percent. Closed-end funds also beat ETFs, with closed-end foreign large value beating their ETF brethren 5.7 percent to 3.2 percent.
