Monday, July 22, 2013 Boston Teens Protest in Front of Putnam A crowd of teens gathered in Boston's financial district to demand that more area businesses provide jobs to young people, The Boston Globe's Emily Overholt reports. Where did the Occupy-like demonstration begin? In front of Putnam Investments [profile] of all places, a mutual fund company that is part of the empire of Canadian company Power Financial. Teen employment in the area has fallen, with 50 percent of teens working a decade ago compared to 27 percent last year. There is a reason Putnam was the target of teen rage, however. The Youth Jobs Coalition wanted to start a partnership with the company to create a summer jobs program but Putnam declined, Overhholt writes. Overholt interviewed a spokesman for Putnam, who said the firm does not have any meaningful opportunities for part-time summer work, and added that the firm has done plenty of charitable efforts locally.
