$390B and $453B Out of $10.08T


After breaking records in 2021, inflows into ESG ETFs and active ETFs have pulled back a bit this year, and their market share of ETF inflows have slipped.

ESG ETFs and ETPs brought in $7 billion in inflows worldwide in March 2022, the ETFGI team reports, and that translates into 5.67 percent of worldwide ETF inflows in March of $123.35 billion. In Q1 2022, ESG ETFs and ETPs brought in $24.88 billion in inflows, their second highest Q1 on record but a drop of 53.48 percent from Q1 2021; ESG funds' inflows marketshare fell to 8.14 percent in Q1 2022, from 14.81 percent in Q1 2021. ESG ETFs have gained 39 months in a row of inflows (compared with 34 months in a row for the ETF industry overall).

Per ETFGI's data, ESG ETFs and ETPs held $389.997 billion in AUM on March 31, 2022, up 3.2 percent from February 28, 2022 but down 0.03 percent from December 31, 2021. In marketshare terms, ESG funds accounted for 3.87 percent of worldwide industry AUM of $10.08 trillion on March 31, 2022, up from 3.85 percent on February 28, 2022 and 3.8 percent on December 31, 2021. There are now 1,004 ESG ETFs and ETPs (9.95 percent of all 10,090 ETFs and ETPs worldwide) from 193 providers (30.73 percent of all 628 providers) and on 40 exchanges (50.63 percent of all 79 exchanges offering ETFs) in 32 countries (51.61 percent of all 62 countries with ETFs).

As for active ETFs, they brought in $10.12 billion in inflows worldwide in March 2022, the ETFGI team reports, and that translates into 8.2 percent of world ETF inflows in March. In Q1 2022, active ETFs brought in $32.97 billion in inflows, their second highest Q1 on record but a drop of 31.54 percent from Q1 2021; active ETFs' inflows marketshare fell to 10.79 percent in Q1 2022, from 13.34 percent in Q1 2021. Active ETFs have gained 24 months in a row of inflows.

Per ETFGI's data, active ETFs held a record $53 billion in AUM on March 31, 2022, up 2.6 percent from February 28, 2022 and up 3.4 percent from December 31, 2021. In marketshare terms, active funds accounted for 4.49 percent of worldwide ETF AUM on March 31, 2022, compared with 4.5 percent on February 28, 2022 and with 4.26 percent on December 31, 2021. There are now 1,557 active ETFs worldwide (15.43 percent of all ETFs and ETPs) from 304 providers (48.41 percent of all providers) and on 29 exchanges (36.71 percent of all exchanges offering ETFs) in 22 countries (35.48 percent of all countries with ETFs).
