Will 2022 Wipe Out Three Years of Bonus Gains?

2022 could be a rough year for fundsters in terms of pay, after big gains in 2021.

The folks at Johnson Associates predict, in their "Financial Services Compensation First Quarter Trends and Year-End Projections" report, that bonuses at asset managers will nearly erase three years worth of gains by the end of the year, falling back close to 2018 levels. They predict that incentives will fall between 10 and 15 percent this year, as AUM (and thus revenue) declines thanks to market woes.

On the bright side, the Johnson team expects asset managers' base salaries to rise five percent this year. Yet that may be overwhelmed by the bonus drop and by rising cost of living. (They expect an 8-percent hit from inflation.)
