MFACT Opens Up

Clients of Global Investment Systems' MFACT fund accounting software should have an easier time accessing the software's "business logic" and tying in other applications.

GIS has been quietly releasing and testing versions of its Web Services capability since February 2003, and announced a complete release last week. Mary Pizzichino, director of sales and marketing, described the move as a "major strategic initiative."

"We realized that we wanted to keep [MFACT] up-to-date and viable and saw the need to open up the business logic from the application," said Barry Moskovits, director of application development. Previously, users could only access MFACT's business layer through the MFACT graphical user interface.

Clients can now tie in other applications, such as portfolio management, other interfaces, tickers, or "any type of interaction that needs to go on between our application and the outside world," through Web Services, said Moskovits. Applications can communicate using XML and HTTP.

GIS clients favoring the old version can still access MFACT's business layer without using Web Services; "we've been conservative in our approach," comments Moskovits.
