Mutual funds charging 12b-1 fees may find that they have a little bit better educated readers this morning. At least if those readers take a look at the Wall Street Journal. The paper's Karen Damato reports that mutual-fund investors paid about $9.5 billion of these fees last year and about 70 percent of funds have at least one share class with a 12b-1 fee, according to the Investment Company Institute trade group.

However, regulators are looking to curtail these fees to better protect investors. The article also provides a couple of examples of fund companies -- including Vanguard Group and T. Rowe Price Group Inc. -- that do not generally have 12b-1 charges on their funds.
