Prudential Investments, which is ramping up efforts in the independent broker-dealer space, hired Toby Miller as sales manager for that channel.

Miller, previously with Columbia Management, joined Prudential last month, Prudential Investments president Judy Rice told The MutualFundWire.

Miller reports to Jim Devaney, national sales manager.
Prudential currently has 10 external wholesalers dedicated to independent b-ds and plans to have a total of 20 in 2011, Rice said.

Miller previously spent 13 years at Columbia, which is now owned by Ameriprise. He left Columbia last month. Earlier in his career, Miller worked at Putnam.

A spokesperson for Columbia was not immediately available for comment how Miller's former duties are being handled.
