Institutional Investor's Julie Segal interviewed
Ron O'Hanley, president of asset management and corporate services for
Fidelity [
profile] on Americans' struggle to save for retirement. It's no surprise that O'Hanley extolled the virtues of saving for retirement, as Fidelity is the country's largest 401(k) manager. Nothing earth-shattering was said.
O'Hanley also answered questions about volatility in target-date funds:
"People are only thinking of it in terms of managing downside volatility, but when managing volatility you're going to manage it on the downside and the upside."
He also noted that plan sponsors give less guidance because of concerns about lawsuits and stressed the importance of reaching the young people through new fangled technology:
"We're doing the work on ramification, making tools available that mimic how younger participants interact online."
