Hedge funds for the average Joe have been getting a lot of press lately, but you won't find support for these alternatives funds in retail investor-used
U.S. News and World Report.
U.S. News and World Report's Daniel Solin points to an article by
Adrian Larson, president and PM of
Pathlight, who notes that over one-year, three-year, five-year and 10-year periods ending July 31, 2012, the
HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index underperformed the
S&P 500.
If an investor used funds of funds, the results didn't fare much better, with the HFRI Funds of Funds Composite Index underperforming in the same time periods, Solin writes. At the end of the day, Solin agrees with Larson that hedge funds are "simply not worth the money."
