The New York Times recently took a look at alt mutual funds, and found them intriguing, but too complex.

Here's what personal finance reporter Tara Siegel Bernard had to write on the subject: The financial advisers I talked to urged extreme caution for the same reason many investors shun traditional actively managed mutual funds. It’s hard to distinguish the skilled money managers from the lucky ones. And even among the seemingly talented, few can sustain a stellar performance over the long haul.
