What will smart beta do if the markets get hit by a selloff?
Barron's columnist Brendan Conway
raises this question in a column which featured the
Barron’s 400 ETF, the
Guggenheim S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF and the
PowerShares FTSE RAFI 1000 ETF.
Conway notes that many of these gee-whiz index products beat the
S&P 500, what-have-you, but warns "every nontraditional stock ETF makes bets for or against measurable stock-market attributes. Those bets will work out some of the time — hopefully most of the time — and in other instances, they won’t."
