Egenera to Power Pioneer's PeopleSoft

News summary by MFWire's editors

Pioneer Investments will use Egenera as the platform to support its PeopleSoft infrastructure and other applications. The Egenera BladeFrame system dynamically allocates and repurposes servers to applications as needed without manual intervention.

Egenera Inc., the data center virtualization company, today announced that Pioneer Investments has selected Egenera as the platform to support its mission critical PeopleSoft infrastructure and other applications. With over $50 billion in assets under management, Pioneer offers investment management services to institutional investors and individuals, and is an investment manager for over 50 mutual funds.

Pioneer relies heavily on a mission critical infrastructure for ongoing reporting comprised of Oracle-PeopleSoft Financials accessed through Citrix® Presentation Server™. Serving thousands of end-users globally, there was a clear need for high availability as well as high performance throughput, and a flexible platform for building a dynamic infrastructure to best support changes in priorities. Pioneer chose Egenera to dynamically reprovision resources, consolidate infrastructure, remove bottlenecks, and take advantage of the inherent N+1 failover and high availability of the Egenera® BladeFrame® system. The Egenera system, which was in full production at Pioneer in less than three weeks, has already cut reporting time significantly.

"Supporting any mission critical system means the platform has to be low-latency, scalable, secure and always available -- those are givens. But we also knew we needed a better way to get more out of our infrastructure -- dynamically reallocating resources as needed, depending on the time of day or night. Egenera proved they could meet all of our growing needs," said Christopher Chapin, vice president of Infrastructure Services at Pioneer. "Every move we make from a technology perspective has to accommodate our growth, as well as entry into new markets. We see Egenera as a key platform moving forward with other strategic applications and initiatives."

The Egenera system's powerful virtualization technology, effective use of resources and inherent high availability drove the decision and were key differentiators compared to offerings from other providers. The Egenera BladeFrame system is meeting Pioneer's near-term performance and consolidation needs, while supporting their strategic vision of a more flexible and responsive data center infrastructure. Pioneer also intends to implement disaster recovery utilizing Egenera going forward.

"Pioneer is a perfect example of a forward-thinking company that is building a truly flexible and responsive data center through data center virtualization and Egenera," said Mike Thompson, president and CEO of Egenera. "When a business is growing as rapidly as Pioneer, data center infrastructure must deliver flexibility, availability and performance, while reducing operational costs. It's gratifying to know that Egenera is helping Pioneer achieve their strategic goals."

The Egenera BladeFrame system dynamically allocates and repurposes servers to applications as needed without manual intervention. With its integrated system of diskless processing resources and virtualization software, Egenera has set a new standard for performance and business value in the enterprise data center. Egenera has been shipping its data center virtualization system since 2001, bringing unmatched experience and innovation to hundreds of enterprises, service providers and government agencies worldwide.
