SmartMoney.com writer Rob Wherry takes a look at a fund company dilemma in
WSJ's special "Investing in Funds" section. Wherry says that many traditional mutual fund companies are now struggling with the question of whether or not to jump into the ETF market and their coping mechanisms fall into three camps: indexing specialists that consider ETFs natural extensions of their existing products (Vanguard), fund companies that buy their way into the ETF world (Invesco-PowerShares) and those companies that have no intention of getting into the ETF game (American Funds, Janus). Currently the third type of approach is the most popular among fund companies as many have yet to to see the $575 billion ETF industry encroach on their $12 trillion playground.
