Seen and Heard at the NICSA Conference

Reported by Erin Kello

Golf was the theme again as in years past at the 26th Annual NICSA Conference and Expo in Miami last week. The conference, held at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa, featured down time each afternoon for the 720 fundies in attendance to hit the course.

Even a bit of rain that threatened on Monday morning during the conference's official golf tournament gave way to sunny skies in the afternoon.

In between golf games the conference featured many informational sessions for attendees to take advantage of. Two fund industry heavyweights were on hand to give the keynote addresses on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Ed Halderman of Putnam spoke about the responsibilities that come with taking care of other people's money. John Brennan of Vanguard commented on a variety of issues currently facing the fund industry. Brennan gave no hint of changes that would be announced at Vanguard two days later (On Friday, Vanguard announced that Bill McNabb will succeed John Brennan as CEO in the next 12 months).

Tuesday night saw the biggest celebration of the conference, the NICSA Rainforest theme party, which was held at a ballroom at the resort. Too much rain in the forest forced the location to be moved indoors from planned location at the spa pool.

At the gala, which was sponsored by Broadridge, live animals made the theme a little more real for the guests. Colorful parrots were available as arm candy for guests at the entrance to the gala. Inside a baby alligator, monitor lizard, turtle and even a three-week old panther, delighted attendees and their children alike.

For attendees who weren't quite ready to turn in after the gala came to a close, South Beach offered a way to extend the night.

After a full three days of events conference goers in the hallways agreed with this reporter's sentiments that the conference was a great time, but it would be good to get home.
