ReFlow Borrows a Thought from SEI

ReFlow Management, a San Francisco-based provider of liquidity solutions to mutual fund firms, has hired Paul Schaeffer as president. Schaeffer takes over from Alan Reid, who remains CEO of the firm.

Schaeffer will also serve as director of strategic planning at ReFlow’s sister company, Forward Management [see profile], sponsor of the Forward Funds.

Prior to joining ReFlow, Schaeffer was managing director of SEI’s investment manager services group, where he was in charge of strategy and thought leadership.


Company Press Release San Francisco, — May 12, 2008 – ReFlow Management Co., LLC, an investment services company providing liquidity solutions to mutual fund companies, is pleased to announce the appointment of highly-regarded mutual fund industry strategist Paul Schaeffer as the company’s new President. Mr. Schaeffer will also serve as Director of Strategic Planning at ReFlow’s sister company, Forward Management, LLC.

“We are delighted to have a seasoned and respected industry expert of Paul’s caliber join us at ReFlow,” said Alan Reid, who will be transferring his duties as President to Mr. Schaeffer while remaining ReFlow’s CEO. “His extensive fund industry experience and thought leadership will be instrumental in meeting the growing demand for ReFlow’s liquidity services. The demand continues to accelerate as mutual fund companies seek to more efficiently manage their funds and thereby improve performance,” Mr. Reid added.

“The mutual fund industry must continue to innovate to enhance the value proposition they deliver to clients. ReFlow’s approach to help managers minimize the negative impact of shareholder activity on alpha breaks new ground,” said Paul Schaeffer. “Managers now have a tool kit to mitigate the impact of investor flows and increase control over cash management, transaction costs, taxes and portfolio manager distraction,” he added.

Before joining ReFlow, Mr. Schaeffer was Managing Director at SEI’s Investment Manager Services group in charge of its strategy and thought leadership. He was responsible for developing overall business strategy, product development and thought leadership initiatives for the investment company. Previously, Mr. Schaeffer was Managing Partner of Investment Counseling, Inc. before being named Executive Vice-President with Capital Resource Advisors. While in this role Mr. Schaeffer was the primary author of Competitive Challenges, the industry’s most recognized best practices study. In addition, he is a frequent speaker at industry conferences organized by Investment Company Institute (ICI), American Bankers Association (ABA), Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR), and US Institute. His background in government and public policy has included positions with President Jimmy Carter, Senator Edward M. Kennedy and Congressman Les Aspin.
