Ed Haldeman, who stepped down Tuesday from his three remaining posts at
Putnam Investments, is the prime candidate to become CEO of
Freddie Mac, the
Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing anonymous sources.
The expected appointment of the 60-year-old Haldeman is subject to the Treasury Department and Federal Housing Finance Agency's approval.
Haldeman was Putnam's CEO from 2003 until June 2008, when he passed the reins to Bob Reynolds. On Tuesday, Putnam said Haldeman was stepping down as Putnam Investment Management chairman, and as president and trustee of Putnam Funds.
