Look Up in the Sky

by: Tony Pennino

Here comes Kaptain Kelmoore. That's right, Kaptain Kelmoore the new superhero from Kelmoore Investment Company. He's the subject of what is intended to be a series of mutual fund comic books from the firm.

"We designed the comic book to explain complex investment issues to customers," Tammy Heiman, senior executive vice president at the firm, told the MutualFundWire.com. It is a educational device designed to help the novice investor as well as attract younger investors. It will be distributed to clients through brokers and financial advisors.

Heiman explained that in the first installment Kaptain Kelmoore explains calls and puts to Citizen Investor Jane. In future installments, Kaptain Kelmoore will tackle such issues as naked versus covered options. The figure is designed to be the "Defender of Truth, Justice, and a Balanced Portfolio."

"We have many different kinds of educational material for our investors and this is one that strikes a chord among certain individuals," the executive further explained. The firm hired a comic book designer for the project, which was far more inexpensive than hiring a graphic artist, according to Heiman.

Kelmoore is not the first financial services institution to take a stab at comic communications. The 401(k) Association under the guidance of Ted Benna launched 401Komics back in 1999. That comic featured Doctor K who had to battle such monsters as the Tax Rex.
