For those of you whose company does not start with the letters "Van," you may be disheartened to see an article published today that declares actively managed funds as "obsolete." And it's not like the article appeared on some blog; the article, "Actively Managed Mutual Funds are Obsolete," was published on Forbes.com.

"Actively managed funds are no longer necessary whenever an index fund becomes available in an asset class. And available they are!" writes Richard Ferri, founder of Portfolio Solutions and co-author of The Bogleheads' Guide to Retirement Planning.
