A West Coast Alt Fund Shop Hires a Marketing Chief
Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor
An alternatives mutual fund startup just hired a marketing chief. Bandon Capital Management [profile] founder and chief investment officer revealed the recent hiring of Whitney Dow as managing director in charge of marketing and relationship management.
Dow previously spent more than four years with fundster research shop FRC (now part of Asset International's Strategic Insight). After that he worked for about six years in business development at Russell Investments, most recently focusing on national accounts.
Bandon chief investment officer Bill Woodruff founded the Portland, Oregon-based SMA manager in January 2008. Three years later, he entered the mutual fund business, launching the Bandon Isolated Alpha Fixed Income Fund. Then last year Woodruff brought on board an intermediary distribution chief.
Woodruff put Dow's hiring in the context of "continuing to build [Bandon's] core management team." Mike Miller, a managing director at Bandon, told MFWire that the shop now has a team of seven working with about $50 million in assets under management.
Hiring Dow, Miller said, is "a reflection of [Bandon's] growth."
"We couldn't have found a better team member than Whitney based on his background and experience," Miller said.
Company Press Release
PORTLAND, OR – January 29, 2013 – Bandon Capital Management (NASDAQ: BANIX) today announced the addition of Whitney Dow to its management team. As Managing Director, Mr. Dow will be responsible for spearheading the firm’s marketing and relationship management efforts.
Mr. Dow brings to Bandon over fifteen years of extensive investment management experience in marketing, business development, and relationship management. Most significantly, he spent nearly six years as a Director with Russell Investments, responsible for the expansion of its distribution footprint in the U.S. by building strategic relationships with national, regional, and independent broker-dealers and other intermediaries. Prior to Russell, Mr. Dow served for five years in consulting and analytical roles with Financial Research Corporation (FRC), a leading research firm specializing in providing sales and marketing insight and guidance to investment management organizations.
Bandon’s Founder and Chief Investment Officer Bill Woodruff commented, “In continuing to build our core management team, we are extremely pleased to have someone of Whitney’s caliber join the firm, as he brings considerable strategic and tactical experience to the organization. His addition is a testament to the growing relevance and importance of the alternative mutual fund sector of the investment management industry. The demand for alternative, non-correlated or idiosyncratic-sourced returns in convenient delivery vehicles like mutual funds is intensifying, and to have a unique long-short debt strategy that just celebrated its two-year anniversary puts us in the right place at the right time.”
Mr. Dow added, “The Bandon Isolated Alpha Fixed Income Fund solves very specific needs expressed quite vocally by the financial services marketplace – the desire for liquid alternative investment strategies to diversify portfolios, the desire for access to customized strategies from top-caliber investment managers, and a track record of proven results during periods of rising rates and market stress. This approach is a timely option for advisors and investors seeking meaningful diversification and uncorrelated returns from their fixed income allocations.”
“Bandon’s investment philosophy and process, utilizing a diverse set of global absolute return-oriented strategies, ranks highly among the limited number of similar offerings available to the wealth management community. I could not be more excited to represent such a valuable solution and to assist the firm as it grows into a position of market leadership in the space.”
Mr. Woodruff concluded, “At Bandon, we continue to see two intertwined yet misplaced sentiments in the fixed income investing community – an obsession with yield, and investors equating fixed income investments with safety. Like equity markets, bond markets generally do not shift gradually. With markets pricing in what seems like everlasting low growth and Fed easing, even some slight economic optimism may create increasing rates much sooner or faster than the market expects. Investors in strategies that deliver returns alternative in their source and composition and not based on market betas will be well-served in such an environment.”

Mutual Funds involve risk including the possible loss of principal. Closed-end funds are subject to investment advisory and other expenses, which will be indirectly paid by the Fund. There is a risk that issuers and counterparties will not make payments on securities and other investments held by the Fund, resulting in losses to the Fund. The Fund's use of derivative instruments involves risks different from, or possibly greater than, the risks associated with investing directly in securities and other traditional investments. Emerging market countries may have relatively unstable governments, weaker economies, and less-developed legal systems with fewer security holder rights. The value of the Fund's investments in fixed income securities and derivatives will fluctuate with changes in interest rates. Currency trading risks include market risk, credit risk and country risk. Investments in foreign securities could subject the Fund to greater risks including, currency fluctuation, economic conditions, and different governmental and accounting standards. The Fund may invest in high yield securities, also known as "junk bonds." High yield securities provide greater income and opportunity for gain, but entail greater risk of loss of principal. Using derivatives to increase the Fund's combined long and short exposure creates leverage, which can magnify the Fund's potential for gain or loss. The default rate on underlying mortgage loans or asset loans may be higher than anticipated, potentially reducing payments to the Fund. As a non-diversified fund, the Fund may invest more than 5% of its total assets in the securities of one or more issuers. The Fund will incur a loss as a result of a short position if the price of the short position instrument increases in value between the date of the short position sale and the date on which the Fund purchases an offsetting position.
