The costs for mutual funds in
401(k) plans keep falling now that sponsors are demanding cheaper investment options,
InvestmentNews reports.
Money market funds average expense ratios decreases as well, from 22 basis points in 2011 to 20 bps in 2012, according to an Investment Company Institute (
ICI)
Survey. Contributions and market performance is fueling growth for mutual funds with retirement plans, said a researcher at ICI.
“Asset growth always helps; it puts pressure on fees,” said Sean Collins, senior director of industry and financial analysis at the ICI. Last year, 60% of 401(k) assets — or $2.14 trillion — were in mutual funds, up sharply from 2011's level of $1.84 trillion."
