BPV Hires a Golfer, and a Skier

Reported by Tommy Fernandez

In a very cool combination of solutions-focused investing and poetic visualization, Back Porch Vista encourages clients to think of their own "back porch vista," that one cool thing they want to do with the rest of their lives when they retire.

The firm's website even features the personal BPV's of the firm's senior execs. For example, newly-hired Tim Sykes has his own back porch vista of "Playing 18 holes of fold with my two sons on a perfect fall afternoon."

The Golfer
Sykes is now hitting holes-in-one for BPV as the newly-hired director of business development, a newly-created position that will involve platform development and relationship management, focused on the qualified retirement sector in the Southeast U.S. He reports to senior partner and chief executive Mike West. He was most recently a senior vice president at Raymond James.

Sykes has a long career in launching and operating retirement-focused firms. For example, in 1996 he co-founded RPC,Inc., a retirement plan design, consulting, and administration firm. He went go on to found the RPC Benefits group in 2008, maintaining his partnership interest in RPC, Inc. until 2013.

Sykes and his team also joined, in 2003, Willis Caroon of North America, where Sykes continued to serve the Southeastern Region as Senior Vice-President for Retirement Services.

He and his team joined the independent retirement RIA SageView Advisory Group. After becoming a principal at SageView and founding Paradigm Investment Advisors, a State of Tennessee fee-only planning RIA. In 2011, Sykes became a founding investor in Impact Benefit Solutions.

The Skier
BPV also hired Jason Napoli, who has the back porch vista of “Skiing with my wife and two young sons on a sunny day at our hometown ski area – Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado. ”

Napoli will serve as regional manager for the southwest U.S., responsible for sales and distribution. He served as president and a principal of High Country Capital Management; director of investment sales for Anthem Securities, as well as vice president and investment advisor at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., and a vice president of sales and marketing at a commodities focused Fund of Hedge Funds in Chicago. He also served as vice president and portfolio manager at Wells Fargo Private Bank. In addition, he managed portfolios for high-net-worth clients at TIAA-CREF Trust Company in Denver, CO.

BPV's Aggressive Growth
The hirings are just the latest in a series of recent moves by BPV aimed at accelerating the firm's growth in a number of channels. For example, West recently hired former Lord Abbett partner Frank Gregory as chief of distribution.

The firm also recently helped Philadelphia equity shop AJO launch a fund, and is looking for more sub-advisors.
