American Century CMO to Retire

by: Sean Hanna, Editor in Chief

American Century is on the prowl for a new chief marketer. The opening is being created by the retirement of 17-year veteran W. Gordon Snyder on June 16. Snyder, chief marketing officer, says that he will continue to work with American Century as a part-time consultant through the end of 2003.

"After more than 17 great years at the company, I decided it was time to step back from my professional responsibilities to focus on family, friends and other interests," Snyder said. "My plans for the immediate future are to watch my youngest son play his many sports, spend more time at my vacation home in Colorado, work on my golf game and put a few miles on my Harley."

Snyder had overall responsibility for all sales and servicing of direct, intermediary and retirement plan customers, as well as corporate marketing. He also served on the firm's executive committee and was a member of the American Century Companies board of directors.

As the head marketer, Snyder has played an instrumental role in American Century's recent push into the advisor sold fund channel. That push included the addition of loads to a number of the firm's funds. He joined the Kansas City-based fund in 1983 when it was known as Twentieth Century. Prior to that time he was spent 13 years as a manager and marketer at IBM. He was also a captain in the US Army serving in Europe.

"Over the years Gordon has played a pivotal role in American Century's successful expansion into various distribution channels, a move that has enabled the company to bring our investment expertise to a broader array of customers," said William M. Lyons, president and CEO of American Century Companies. "We will miss his creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. On behalf of the company, I thank Gordon for his years of service and wish him all the best in the future."
