Gus Sauter is getting some help. The manager of Vanguard's index funds will get a hand managing the firm's active funds from Joel M. Dickson, principal. Along with his indexing duties, Sauter also heads the Vanguard Quantitative Equity Group.

Dickson will become co-portfolio manager to the Strategic Equity Fund and portions of Morgan Growth, Explorer, and Windsor II funds, according to an SEC filing.

Dickson has worked in investment management for Vanguard since 1996.
