In Memoriam 2016

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

MFWire remembers the fundsters we lost this year.

Donald Keith Ross Sr.
New York Life
Former Chairman and CEO

Donald Keith Ross Sr.

1/5 - Ross brought New York Life into the mutual fund business with the creation of the MainStay mutual fund family in 1986. He spent his entire career at New York Life, rising from trainee all the way to chairman and CEO before retiring.

James Rippey

2/27 - Rippey and John Inskeep (who died in 2009) founded Columbia Management, Portland, Oregon's first mutual fund shop. Rippey started his career at Merrill Lynch before co-founding Columbia.

Albert Owen Nicholas

8/4 - Nicholas founded Nicholas Company in 1967 and launched its flagship mutual fund in 1969. Prior to that he worked with Northwest Insurance Company and M&I Bank.

Roman Ranocha

8/7 - Ranocha was a director and PM at AEW Capital Management, a Natixis subsidiary. He spent sixteen years at the firm, and previously worked at Alliance Capital Management and Liquidity Financial Group.

Bonnie Baha

8/21 - Baha led global developed credit at DoubleLine Capital, where she helped shape the firm's philosophy, joining a year after its founding. Before that, she spent nineteen years at TCW.

Dean J. Patenaude, Jr.

9/11 - Patenaude served as head of global distribution for Artisan Partners, leading the firm's evolution from a U.S. focused shop to a global business. Prior to that he worked at Brinson, Wellington, and AMG.

Jack Rivkin

11/8 - Rivkin led Altegris after working with Mitchell Hutchins, Citi, Neuberger Berman, PaineWebber, and the U.S. Army. His transformation of Shearson Lehman's equity research department even inspired an HBS case study.
