Gundlach Versus the Rasputin of Politics

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

Jeffrey Gundlach is taking on the Democratic presidential hopefuls: the "Rasputin of politics" (Joe Biden), "too old to be a snowflake" (Beto O'Rourke), and a "tornado of anger and insincerity" (Elizabeth Warren).

Gundlach, CEO of DoubleLine Capital [profile], is speaking onstage at the 24th annual Sohn Investment Conference, hosted again at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall in New York City. A host of investment gurus (mostly hedge fundsters) speak at the giant event (roughly 1,500 people), and each gets just 15 minutes to present a single investment idea.

Following his previous Sohn speech pattern, Gundlach titled his remarks "Investment Cubism 2019" and opened with references to modern art, this time to a Jackson Pollack masterpiece, Convergence. (Gundlach highly recommends the 1,000-piece puzzle.) He also mentioned Plato and Socrates before tackling various Democratic presidential candidates.

"No, Joe, I don't want you grabbing my shoulders and giving me an eskimo kiss," Gundlach says of Biden.

As for Warren, he likens listening to her to "being trapped with the mother-in-law from hell."

Gundlach has the final speaking spot of the day. He was introduced by conference co-chair Keith Johnson.

"Remind me never to play poker against Jeff Gundlach," Johnson quipped after reminding the audience of the tale of Gundlach solving the theft of his own art.

The Sohn Conference Foundation, named in honor of the late Ira Sohn, puts on this flagship event (and a host of others like it around the world) to raise money to fight childhood diseases, especially pediatric cancer. Since 1995, the foundation has raised more than $85 million.

Gundlach has spoken at the Sohn conference for years. Past subjects included Facebook, the myth of passive, presidential campaign slogans, and the housing market
